iPhone App - ROSAT Re-entry App
The ROSAT Re-entry App was created by Creative Intersection as an exercise in distributed data connectivity, with just a hint of nerdy fun thrown in! As the final moments of the German ROSAT satellite's re-entry neared, users received push notifications to their handset, which relieved the need to sit at their computer all day and night waiting for an update.
Full satellite tracking websites have failed in the past due to the massive influx of users in the final hours, a significant example being the UARS re-entry event earlier in 2011.
The ROSAT Re-entry App itself (http://rosatapp.com), in conjunction with the servers feeding data to the app, were built specifically to be extremely efficient and are each capable of handling more than 600,000+ requests per minute. 5+ servers were deployed to handle that load, and the app-based service performed perfectly with no delays or load issues.
Although it's not our "game", 18 hours out from the ROSAT event, we estimated a downing that turned out to be accurate within 7 minutes of the actual re-entry. We did this with the help of several amateur and professional tracking enthusiasts from around the world.
